How to Launch on Reddit (2026): Subreddits That Allow Self-Promotion
How to launch on Reddit without a removal: twelve maker subreddits, the rule each one publishes, and the required thread or flair. Checked October 2026.
Reddit’s rule is the community rule, plus a spam rule
Reddit does not have a launch button. The content policy, read on October 23, 2026 at https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy, says in Rule 2: “Abide by community rules. Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation) that interfere with Reddit communities.” The same page says those platform rules sit under the rules of each community, and that moderators enforce the community rules.
The spam help page at https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043504051-Spam was updated October 22, 2026. It opens with “Do not use Reddit for repeated or unsolicited mass engagement.” Spam, in that page’s words, is “repeated or unsolicited actions (whether automated or manual) that negatively affect users, communities, and/or Reddit itself.” One example is “Mass-posting repetitive content for the purpose of exposure or financial gain.” Another is “Programming a bot that continuously promotes specific products or services within a community or across many communities.”
The same page tells you how to stay off that list. “Post authentic content into communities where you have a personal interest.” Then the line founders actually need: “If your contributions to Reddit consist primarily of links to a business that you run, own, or otherwise benefit from, please be thoughtful about the frequency of posting, or consider advertising opportunities using our self-serve platform.” It also says to check the community’s own rules, and that “community moderators adjudicate what constitutes unwanted/spammy content in their communities and may take action accordingly.”
Reddiquette, updated October 5, 2026, at https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette, is the older user-written norm the help center still publishes. On your own links it says: “Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror — you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.” It also says flooding Reddit with a lot of stories in a short span can get future submissions blocked by the spam filter, and that sending messages asking people to vote for your submission “will result in a ban from the admins.”
Read those three pages as the sitewide constraint, and the table as the local one. A single honest post in a room that exists for that post is a different act from ten copies of a landing page in an afternoon. This catalog’s page for the site as a whole is /platforms/reddit. Every guide is listed at /guides.
What was actually read on October 23, 2026
Checked October 23, 2026. Requests to https://www.reddit.com/r//about/rules.json and to old.reddit.com came back as “You've been blocked by network security,” with a prompt to log in or use a developer token. The rows below are not guesses and they are not a third-party summary. Each one is quoted from an Internet Archive capture of that subreddit’s own about.json (sidebar and submit text) or about/rules.json. The date in the row is the capture date. The member count is the subscribers field in that about.json capture. It is not a live count for October 23.
If a subreddit had no such capture, it is not in the table. That is why r/EntrepreneurRideAlong, r/alphaandbetausers, r/IMadeThis, r/roastmystartup, r/selfhosted, r/opensource, r/coolgithubprojects, r/buildinpublic, r/microsaas, r/shamelessplug, and r/sideprojects are absent: the Wayback CDX index had no HTTP 200 about.json or rules.json for them from January 2023 through October 23, 2026. r/marketing’s about.json from April 1, 2026 only says to read the rules, and its rules.json was not in the index, so it is out too. r/dataisbeautiful’s newest about.json in that index is from June 2023, which is too old to treat as a 2026 rule. Read the live sidebar again before you post. Rules change, and an archive is a copy of a day, not a promise about tomorrow.
Twelve rooms, and the rule each one wrote
Twelve subreddits where the captured rule text allows some form of showing your own work, with a constraint written next to it. A cell that says a weekly thread means the launch belongs in that thread. A cell that says a weekday means the other six days are removals. The source list under the table is the archive URL for each file.
| Subreddit | What the captured rule allows | Day, thread, or flair | Members on that capture | File and capture date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| r/SideProject | Sidebar: a subreddit “for sharing and receiving constructive feedback on side projects,” and “please submit links to projects you find interesting.” The rules file from the same season lists no custom rules. | Submit text: “[Project name] - [Short description].” No weekday or flair is stated in these two files. | 716,586 subscribers on 2026-05-16 | r/SideProject about.json 2026-05-16; rules.json 2026-03-06 (zero custom rules) |
| r/startups | “No direct sales, advertisements, or promotional posts of any kind.” Same rule: “You MAY share your startup in the Share Your Startup thread.” Feedback, surveys, and polls go in the feedback thread. A comment may link only to content you have no affiliation with. | Stickied Share Your Startup thread. Separate feedback thread. Submissions need at least 250 characters. No weekday is named for the share thread. | 2,026,765 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/startups about.json 2026-04-01 (rules are in the sidebar; no rules.json in the index) |
| r/SaaS | Rules file: “Promotion is ok here, but please don’t mention your SaaS/blog/company unless it’s relevant and actually helpful for someone reading. Overdoing it results in a ban.” Feedback requests go in the weekly feedback thread. For a blog post, the rule says the only way a link is allowed is at the end (“Originally posted here”), unless highly relevant, and adds “don't abuse this.” | Weekly feedback thread, described as pinned. No flair is named in the rules file. | 643,296 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/SaaS about/rules.json 2026-04-01; members from about.json the same day |
| r/indiehackers | “Users can self promote their product 1 time using the SHOW IH flare. The purpose is for feedback and critique not advertisement.” The rule text spells it “flare.” Posts about MRR need proof, or they do not stay. | SHOW IH flair, once. No weekday is named. | 160,613 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/indiehackers about/rules.json 2026-04-01; members from about.json the same day |
| r/webdev | “Sharing your project, portfolio, or any other content that you want to either show off or request feedback on is limited to Showoff Saturday. If you post such content on any other day, it will be removed.” “We do not allow any commercial promotion or solicitation.” The sidebar also points at Reddit’s 9:1 rule. | Showoff Saturday only. A question with no flair is removed. No commercial solicitation. | 3,215,103 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/webdev about.json 2026-04-01 (sidebar and submit text; no rules.json in the index) |
| r/InternetIsBeautiful | Sidebar welcomes single-purpose websites, top-level domains, web tools, and “awesome websites that offer a unique service.” It says not to post “Online stores, paid services, or sites which serve only to sell a specific product,” sites that require a login or email, or extensions and software that require a download. | No day or flair is stated in the captured sidebar. The detailed wiki was not in the archive index, so this row is the sidebar only. | 16,589,083 subscribers on 2025-05-08 | r/InternetIsBeautiful about.json 2025-05-08 (newest capture in the index; no 2026 copy) |
| r/Entrepreneur | “Posts and comments must NOT be made for the primary purpose of selling or promoting yourself, your company or any service.” Dropping URLs, asking people to DM you, or telling them to check your profile “will all lead to a permanent ban.” Promotions, offers, and discounts belong in Thank You Thursday. A website or portfolio belongs in Feedback Friday. | Thank You Thursday for offers. Feedback Friday for a site or portfolio. Text posts require 10 comment karma in this sub. The sidebar says not to message the mods for a waiver. | 5,110,431 subscribers on 2026-03-17 | r/Entrepreneur about.json 2026-03-17 (rules are in the sidebar) |
| r/smallbusiness | Public description: “This sub is not for advertisements!” Rules: “No business promotion posts are allowed. Promote your business in the weekly Promote-your-business thread only.” A relevant reply may mention the business if that is not the main purpose of the account and it is not done repeatedly. | Weekly Promote-your-business thread. Offers of free work “to build a portfolio” count as promotion and are not allowed as posts. | 2,425,422 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/smallbusiness about.json 2026-04-01 (rules are in the sidebar) |
| r/nocode | “Promoting your own products is allowed, but the post must be first and foremost a value-add post for the community.” You must disclose your connection to a tool you post about. “All product launch posts should be made on the monthly product launch post.” Undisclosed affiliate links get the whole post removed. | “Promoted” flair when you post your own tool. A company flair if you represent a company. Monthly product launch post for launches. | 119,042 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/nocode about/rules.json 2026-04-01; members from about.json the same day |
| r/GrowthHacking | “If you are sharing your blog post, product, podcast or video, make sure you have at least 100 Community Karma by engaging in the community.” A founder, employee, or marketer promoting a SaaS tool must “seek permission from the mod.” One link at the end of original content is allowed after that karma bar. “Links from TikTok and ProductHunt are banned unless approved by the mod team.” | 100 community karma before your own product or blog. Mod permission for a SaaS promo. Surveys, feedback, and beta tests that collect contact details also need mod permission. | 134,730 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/GrowthHacking about/rules.json 2026-04-01; members from about.json the same day |
| r/ChatGPT | “Posts must be directly related to ChatGPT or the topic of AI. They may not be solely focused on advertising a single other LLM service,” and those posts “should directly go to weekly self-promotional mega thread, which is pinned.” This is a room for a product about ChatGPT or LLMs, not a general startup launch. | Weekly self-promotional megathread, pinned. The rule does not name a weekday. | 11,424,388 subscribers on 2026-04-01 | r/ChatGPT about/rules.json 2026-04-01; members from about.json the same day |
| r/Notion | “Self-promotional and showcase content is only allowed in the fortnightly pinned Self-promo & Showcase threads.” The rule names free and paid templates, third-party integrations, and dashboard showcases. This is the room for a Notion tool, not a general SaaS launch. | Fortnightly pinned Self-promo & Showcase thread. No other day is described as acceptable for a showcase. | 456,758 subscribers on 2026-05-16 | r/Notion about/rules.json 2026-05-16; members from about.json the same day |

How to write a launch post that stays up
Write the post the rule is asking for. On r/indiehackers the captured rule says the point of the one self-promo is “feedback and critique not advertisement.” On r/SaaS the post has to be “relevant and actually helpful for someone reading.” On r/nocode it has to be “first and foremost a value-add post.” On r/startups, a normal submission is for discussing a method “WITHOUT tying them directly to your own project using its name or URL.” The product name and the URL go in the Share Your Startup thread, not in a disguised essay.
The shape that matches those lines is a build story with one question at the end. What you were trying to do. The constraint you refused to paper over. What is still rough, in one concrete sentence. The feedback you want, named, so a stranger can answer it without touring the whole product. A SideProject title that follows the submit text looks like this, as a format example and not a real post: “Ledgerline - a CSV reconciler for freelancers who hate bank exports.”
Put the link where the rule puts it. r/SideProject’s submit text is the link, in that title format. r/SaaS wants the ideas in the Reddit post, and the link at the end, “Originally posted here,” unless the link itself is the highly relevant thing. r/nocode wants the connection disclosed and the Promoted flair on, and the launch itself in the monthly launch post. r/webdev wants the show-off on Saturday, and it forbids commercial solicitation, so a Saturday post that is a demo and a question is the post the sidebar describes. A Saturday post that is a checkout page is the one the same sidebar bans.
r/InternetIsBeautiful is narrower than “I made a startup.” The sidebar wants a single-purpose site or a web tool, and it rejects stores, paid services that only sell a product, anything that requires a login or an email, and anything that requires a download. A marketing site with a signup wall does not meet that sidebar. A small tool someone can use in the browser, with nothing to buy on the page, is the kind of URL the sidebar describes. The capture is May 8, 2025. Check the live sidebar before you use it.
Two karma gates are written down, and they are not optional. r/Entrepreneur requires 10 comment karma inside that sub before a text post, earned by replies that other people upvote, and it says not to message the mods for a waiver. r/GrowthHacking requires at least 100 community karma before you share your own blog, product, podcast, or video, and a SaaS promo needs permission from the mods first. If you do not have that history, the launch post is early. Comment there for a while. The 9:1 line in Reddiquette is the same idea stated for the whole site.
Timing is the day the subreddit named
Where a weekday is written, that weekday is the rule. r/webdev’s Showoff Saturday means Saturday, and the sidebar says any other day gets the project post removed. r/Entrepreneur’s Thank You Thursday is the offers thread, and Feedback Friday is the website thread. r/SaaS, r/startups, r/smallbusiness, r/nocode, r/ChatGPT, and r/Notion name a pinned thread (weekly, monthly, or fortnightly) and do not name a clock. You wait for that thread. You do not start a new one because the pinned post is three days old.
r/SideProject and the r/InternetIsBeautiful sidebar do not name a day. Nothing in the files that were read supports a magic hour, a timezone trick, or a “best minute.” Do not invent one. The constraint that is written down elsewhere is presence: r/SaaS lists disappearing after you post a discussion as one of the bad behaviours, next to flooding and duplicate posts. Post when you can stay.
Do not stack the comment-heavy mornings. A Show HN wants a weekday in US time and a maker who stays in the thread. That guide is /guides/show-hn. Product Hunt goes live at 12:01am Pacific and wants the maker in comments for the day. That guide is /guides/how-to-launch-on-product-hunt. A Reddit thread wants the same hours. Put them on different days. r/GrowthHacking also bans Product Hunt links unless a mod has approved them, so a Product Hunt URL does not belong in that subreddit as the launch.
Reply like a person who is still in the thread
The first hour is part of the post. Answer the question the comment asked. If someone says the price is unclear, say the price. If someone says they already use another tool, say what you refused to copy, not a second copy of the headline. r/startups’ kindness rule says to explain why you disagree. It also says that being supportive “does not mean to lie.” r/Entrepreneur allows criticism of the idea and bans personal attacks. Do not fight the room, and do not delete a hard comment because it looks bad under the post.
If the rules put the link in a comment, the reply is where it goes when someone asks for it. If the rules say not to ask for DMs, do not end a reply with “DM me.” r/Entrepreneur says that asking users to DM you leads to a permanent ban. r/SaaS says “No PM requests please,” with a parenthetical that a PM is all right when the other person actually asked. Wait for the ask.
Do not ask for upvotes, in the post or in a reply or in a message to a group chat. Reddiquette, quoted above, says asking people to vote for your submission results in a ban from the admins. A comment that says “show this some love” is the same request in softer words.
What to do after the thread cools
Leave it up. A thread that survived is a public record of how strangers described the product. Do not edit it into a harder pitch after the comments arrive. Do not delete it because one reply was blunt.
Do not paste the same post into the next subreddit that afternoon. The spam page’s example is mass-posting repetitive content for exposure. Reddiquette warns that a flood of stories in a short span can get later submissions blocked. One room, then stop. The next room is a later day, and only after you have read that room’s rule. r/indiehackers allows the self-promo once. A “we launched, part two” in the same subreddit is a second self-promo.
Use the comments before you book the next morning. If three people misunderstood the same sentence, fix the sentence on the homepage before Show HN or Product Hunt. Those guides are /guides/show-hn and /guides/how-to-launch-on-product-hunt. Other places that still take a free submission are in /guides/free-launch-platforms. A dated four-week calendar that can hold a free-only plan is /tools/launch-plan-generator. It runs in the browser. It does not post to Reddit for you. The Reddit catalog page, with the short version of this advice, is /platforms/reddit.
Mistakes that get the post removed
The failures are usually visible in the draft. The same paragraph in five subreddits. A link in the title of a subreddit that only allows the link at the end, or in a pinned thread. A brand-new account whose first post is the product. A request for upvotes. A maker who posts and leaves. An AI-written announcement in a subreddit that forbids that. r/Entrepreneur’s sidebar says “AI-generated content is not acceptable to be posted,” and that it can be a permanent ban. That line is about r/Entrepreneur. It is not a claim about every subreddit.
Three more rooms were readable, and their rules say a launch does not belong there. They are not in the table above because the table is the rooms that allow a path.
- r/programming, rules file captured 2026-02-12: “r/programming is not a place to post your project, get feedback, ask for help, or promote your startup.” A technical writeup of what was hard is allowed. The same rule says just a link to a GitHub page, or a list of features, is not. The about.json captured 2026-10-06 still says “Are you interested in promoting your own content? STOP!” and links “Read this first” to Reddit’s self-promotion wiki. It also says “Direct links to app demos (unrelated to programming) will be removed.” Members on that October 6 capture: 6,786,030. - r/ObsidianMD, rules file captured 2026-05-16: “If you are just here to advertise your product, don’t.” And: “If your first and only post is to promote your project (vibe-coded or otherwise), you will be immediately banned.” Members on the about.json capture the same day: 322,444. - r/Productivity, rules file captured 2026-05-11: “No soliciting or surveying of products or services of any type. Self-promotion is not allowed here in any form, even if asked for recommendations. Advertising via DMs and referral codes are included in this rule.” Members on the about.json capture of 2026-03-17: 4,150,691. A short checklist before you hit post
Run the draft against the row, not against a general feeling that Reddit “likes authenticity.” If a line fails, wait or rewrite. The thread will still be there next week.
- The subreddit is one of the twelve, and you followed the thread, weekday, or flair that row names.
- The link is where that rule puts it: in the SideProject title, at the end of a SaaS post, inside the Share Your Startup thread, on Showoff Saturday, or in the monthly or fortnightly thread.
- The body is the build and one specific question. It is not a feature list with a coupon.
- You can stay in the comments. r/SaaS treats disappearing as a violation.
- You are not under a karma gate you have not met: 10 comment karma in r/Entrepreneur, 100 community karma and mod permission for a SaaS post in r/GrowthHacking.
- You have not asked anyone to upvote, and you are not pasting this post into a second subreddit today.
- Show HN, Product Hunt, and this Reddit post are on different days. Those guides are /guides/show-hn and /guides/how-to-launch-on-product-hunt.
